Content Packaging

SALTIS' first priority has been to support better standards for content interoperability. The first two years of SALTIS' existence has been making the case for better content interoperability—most notably in our paper Supporting Interoperable Learning Technology, published at BETT 2009.

At the same time, BECTA announced a new project to draw up a content packaging profile (a kind of incremental technical standard). After extensive bidding and initialisation negotiations, this project was formally announced on 14th August 2009.

SALTIS will support a team led by independent consultants EdICTs to establish the project’s detailed requirements. A second team, led by industry supplier RM and including technical consultants from the IMS Global Learning Consortium, will produce the main technical outputs, while EdICTs, working through SALTIS, will ensure that these outputs command sufficient levels of support both from industry and end-user groups. The project’s final stage, managed again by the EdICTs team, will make recommendations for the governance and sustainability of any new interoperability standards which are to be used in UK schools.

An interim report on content publisher interviews, along with a first indication of likely requirements for the project, is now available in papers, and video briefings on the structure of the project and on the interim report are available in the videos section.
